project description

The rising concern about single use plastic has become more prominent in today’s society. This is why it is important to phase out the use of these plastics, and stimulate a shift towards more positive behaviour around this topic. The assignment for this project is to develop a concept for a machine that refills bottles. This creates an alternative for users to reduce the use of single-use plastics. The focus of this project will be:

  • Designing the mechanical aspects of the intake and outtake of the bottle, which will be done in collaboration with Mechanical engineering students from Liverpool university.

  • The user experience. The user should be encouraged and stimulated to use the machine.

  • The user interface. This should be intuitive and easy to use.

problem statement

With a seemingly ever-growing population, the environment is going to struggle with yet a further increase of plastic waste, mainly derived from single use plastic packaging. It is important for this problem to be reduced directly from the source but also to educate people about how by simply changing some of their habits they can contribute to make the world a better place. By introducing a service encouraging the reuse of plastic bottles, supermarkets can reduce their plastic footprint and gradually shift the mindset of their clientele.
