project description

The EU in 2017. Developed the WLTP test for cars to know their emissions and have more reliable data about cars in the EU market. This new test replaces the old outdated NEDC test last updated in 1997.

Until now car dealers were obligated to display a car label next to the car, al- though each country had its own normalization of such. Now, with the implementation of the WLTP test —which includes more information—, new labels have to be de- signed. Therefore, the EU auto industry recommends a revision of the Car Labeling Di- rective.

problem statement

New car labels are going to be introduced, nevertheless —and according to our research— most people say they care about the environment but they don’t really take labels into account to make better decisions whether it is because they don’t trust the label or they simply don’t understand their content and rankings. Furthermore, if they understand it, they don’t really know the conditions under the cars are tested and have even less consciousness of how adding accessories to the car reduces the vehicle effi- ciency. We consider the aim of such changes to be reducing carbon emissions and helping users to buy more suitable cars for their needs, but cars have a relatively long life span, so many drivers won’t change their cars just because now they can make a better decision. As a result, the adaptation of all users to the new system might take years.

design question
As pollution levels are reaching it's top —in cities—, how can we help the EU to help European car drivers to reduce their car emissions by having a better driving behavior and considering the new WLTP test?
