project description

The rapid developments in electronics over the last decades have increased capabilities like computing speed and memory size, while bringing down both size and price of hardware. This has led to integration of these technologies in many aspects of life. Both work and leisure are increasingly digital, and more and more products contain electronics and are connected to the internet.

These developments have led to a more sedentary lifestyle, where people spend a big amount of time sitting down and looking at some kind of scree. Physical activity is decreasing, which brings along problems like obesity and other health risks. Furthermore, for children, the decrease in physical activities is causing a decline in the development of motor skills.

Springlab is a social enterprise with a mission to is to stimulate learning while moving. They plan to make 500,000 people happy every day by moving them with their products that are developed and marketed non-stop. Their projects recently have taken place in the kindergarten, currently they are seeking to expand to primary schools. To make school children learn by engaging in physical activity they want to introduce an acoustic educative game with visual elements in the primary schoolyards.

This project focuses on getting children to move more, in different aspects of their life which help to develop healthy lifestyle for the long run.

problem statement

The development of technology caused physical disconnection and socialising problems and it is replacing 'embodied learning' using the whole body and material. Springlab has only one smart object to enhance embodied and playful learning through games that follow the school curriculum, but it is only adaptable indoors and not for the desired target group age rage. Currently they do not own a smart object that could integrate their vision into the primary school outdoor environment where the kids need to be kept focused, especially with the use of visual stimuli to develop their individual skills while receiving feedback from their teachers and playing groups/pairs or alone.

design question

How to design and prototype a smart object for kids to get away from their screens and to engage in physical (educational) activity?

client

Springlab, mission to stimulate learning while moving. They state it is healthier and more fun, but also more effective to move more during educational activities.
